Poor mental health is a major source of distress, disability, and social burden in older adults. It is the third cause of burden of disease, surpassed only by heart and cerebrovascular disease. There is a gap in knowledge about the factors determining poor mental health in older adults. In this study, factors associated with mental distress in adults 65 years and older were examined. In the present study, mental health was conceptualized using the population health promotion model and the socio-ecological model of health. Both models emphasize behavioral, sociological, and social determinants of health and assert that health is determined by cultural; social, and economic factors on individual and population level. The present study used Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS) to explore the relationship between frequent mental distress (FMD), disability, and access to healthcare in older adults. The research question examined whether disability and limited access to health care contribute to FMD in older adults. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationships between FMD and its risk factors. The results revealed inverse relationship between age and FMD. The analysis also showed that disability and health care cost barriers are associated with FMD in older adults. No relationship was found between FMD and the attendance on routine physical check-ups or between FMD and the availability of personal doctor. The findings of this study contributed to positive social change through its assessment of risk factors for mental distress in older adults. A better understanding of these risk favors will foster greater well being and quality of life in U.S. elderly.
