Problem-based learning is an authentic learning experience where the learner directs their own learning process and product after being presented with a loosely constructed question. This study attempted to evaluate whether problem-based learning (PBL) would be a successful teaching method in a 3 rd grade social studies class. This was important to consider because PBL appears to be a successful method of teaching in other educational settings such as medical schools and post-secondary education; however, little research shows its effectiveness in elementary grades.

Data were collected in two classes -- one experiment and one control - using Likert scale surveys, pre- and post-tests, open-ended questionnaires, and teacher observation notes. The results of the analysis showed that PBL can be a successful method of teaching for 3rd graders, and that students do enjoy student-centered learning experiences with their peers -- even students as young as 3rd graders.
