Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Phoenix, 2010.
This qualitative phenomenological case study investigated the lived experiences of a purposive sample of 32 former high school students who professed to be apathetic when they were in high school. The study's aim was to determine how apathetic behaviors of high school students could be controlled so that students would complete their class assignments. The study explored motivational strategies for educational leaders to adopt to inspire their students to learn. The study included a triangulation method for participants to write responses to qualitative questions, to respond to open-ended questions via one-on-one interview, and to participate in a videotaped session to respond to extended qualitative questions. The results of the study showed apathetic students were bored in high school because lessons were not fun, not entertaining and, in some cases, not understandable by them. The study's participants revealed a one-on-one approach of teaching and a tangible awards program to recognized students' efforts would have motivated them to continue learning. The study offers practical steps that teachers may use to control apathy among students and to motivate students to learn.
