Thesis (M.S.)--University of Wyoming, 2010.
The purpose of this study is to answer the question: Are users of online social networks (OSNs) utilizing OSNs to facilitate kinkeeping; and if so, how? Participants were 290 adults with profiles on the OSN Facebook. Results indicated that respondents are using Facebook for kinkeeping tasks. The majority said they joined Facebook to keep in touch with family, and almost all respondents reported having family members as Facebook Friends. Respondents said they keep in touch with relatives on Facebook primarily through activities such as sharing personal/family news and media, and communication through messaging and posts on Friends' Walls. Respondents reported their family relationships were enriched through kinkeeping on Facebook, although tensions between relatives did occur. Facebook was especially beneficial to the kinkeeping of those respondents with family members in other countries; respondents noted that Facebook is inexpensive and easy to use for international communication. Future research should consider exploring the role of the kinkeeper, the use of kinkeeping on OSNs by families of different types, and by family members of different genders and generations. The issues surrounding kinkeeping and OSNs are important issues for Family Life Educators to consider in their work with families across the life span.
