Numerous studies have examined help-seeking attitudes among various ethnic minority and mainstream groups. Despite these efforts, our understanding of help-seeking practices among ethnic minorities remains incomplete. One limitation of the current literature is that help-seeking attitudes are general and not diagnosis or symptom specific. The goal of this study was to use a symptom-specific approach to better understand how help-seeking attitudes vary across problem-types and ethnic groups. Results indicated that previously identified predictors of general help-seeking attitudes and actual help-seeking behaviors (e.g., collectivism, perceived severity of symptoms, and symptom and treatment stigma) also predicted symptom-specific help-seeking attitudes. However, they had differential effects on help-seeking attitudes across symptom profiles. Specifically, treatment stigma was negatively related while perceived severity was positively related to help-seeking attitudes for depression and anxiety. Symptom stigma was positively correlated with help-seeking attitudes for anxiety only. For neurasthenia and schizophrenia, the predictor variables interactively influenced help-seeking attitudes. Lastly, Latinos had more favorable help-seeking attitudes than Asian Americans for depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety. Understanding symptom-specific help-seeking attitudes can help mental health providers develop more effective prevention and intervention programs.
