Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2009.
This study was concerned with the enrollment patterns in required core curriculum courses and the related success, as measured by grade average, of vocational-education students in a multicampus urban community college. The purpose of this study was to examine the general education course enrollment patterns of vocational-education students in specific programs at intervals of course work. Also, this study set out to determine whether successful completion (grade of C or better) of certain required general education courses is related to successful completion in vocational-education course work for the vocational-education student. The findings of this study indicated that vocational-education students are more likely to enroll in core curriculum courses early and will choose to complete both English and a mathematics course prior to vocational course work. Also, successful completion of a required core curriculum course does not necessarily contribute to the success in a vocational-education course as measured by grade average. It is recommended for further study that the course enrollment patterns of vocational-education students should be reviewed through studies, such as this, to determine whether avoidance of core curriculum courses is occurring and whether success in core curriculum courses in contributing to academic success in other vocation-education programs.
