This study considered factors affecting job satisfaction of senior enlisted noncommissioned officers in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard. Senior leaders need to be retained in the ambiguous security environment of our century. Most Army organizations struggle with the challenge of retaining highly-skilled senior individuals. The training and experience of tested professionals increases their value to civilian organizations. The replacement of these personnel requires substantial organizational resources and time to develop the experience and maturity required. The culminating promotion of an individual to sergeant major in itself is a success. Only 3% of Army personnel achieve said rank. However, at the onset of everyone's career, the individual candidate for enlistment must take and pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) with a minimum score for accession into the service, from which scores within the ten subsets determines the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) choices of a given recruit. This study will examine ASVAB scores of sergeants' major and determine their current level of job satisfaction. The study will also examine the relationship between a soldier being directed toward a given MOS and its related job satisfaction and a soldier who freely chooses an MOS at the onset of a career and its related job satisfaction. Frequencies and analysis of variance should provide insight into the level of job satisfaction as it relates to the circumstances above. This data will provide information on the effectiveness of the ASVAB and how it places recruits in a given MOS.
