Individuals who have spent some or all of their childhood years abroad due to their parents' occupations, also known as Third Culture Kids (TCK's), have a very unique set of benefits and challenges. Little research has been done to more fully understand these issues, and therefore, therapists do not have enough information to help this population utilize their advantages and overcome their challenges. This study's purpose was to determine the most important themes of the TCK experience, identify the unique identity formation and relational experiences faced by TCK's, and explore how therapists can be more helpful to these clients.

520 $a An online survey consisting of open-ended questions was completed by 88 respondents who were members of either TCKresearch.com or Overseas Brats - both web-based TCK communities. TCK's who had parents in the military were excluded from this study. The survey questions were of a qualitative nature, but the results were analyzed using quantitative methods to provide both a general overview and deeper insight. Also, Erikson's theory of psychosocial development and attachment theory were applied to create a framework of understanding for therapists.
520 $a It was determined that the greatest benefits of the TCK experience are a larger worldview, adaptability and independence, language skills, and being open-minded, and the biggest challenges are identity, restlessness, and relationships. Although there were several advantages identified, identity problems for adult TCK's include not having a stable identity, feeling like an outcast, and rootlessness. Relationships with spouse, children, and friends were also more problematic for adult TCK's, and relationships with parents and siblings were both better and worse at the same time. Based on these results and respondents' own ideas, it is suggested that therapists with adult TCK clients become more educated about their specific issues, provide a safe place and empathy, offer concrete suggestions rather than just insight, and encourage TCK's to use supplemental resources.
