This dissertation is designed to review a middle school Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) club that exists within a suburban community on Long Island, New York. This was accomplished by comparing school climates for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students at this middle school with a similar middle school that does not have a GSA club through school staff members. Staff at the middle school with the GSA club also completed a semi-structured questionnaire to evaluate further how the GSA club has impacted the school environment since its commencement in 2005. In comparing the two schools, the middle school with the GSA club was found to have a more welcoming environment for LGBTQ students in a variety of categories, as compared to the other middle school. The establishment of the GSA club and an analysis of cost were also provided.
