The 21st century post-modern culture challenges the Church to reexamine the Biblical mandate for storytelling and to follow the Biblical example in contemporary, relevant storytelling. Post-modern worshippers are seeking worship celebrations that are participatory and experiential. Narrative theology places the individual faith stories of God's people within the context of a communal story of God and of all God's children. Current technology offers new mediums for narrative theology's focus. The Church in our culture desperately needs to learn to tell the "old, old Story" in a very new way!

The Story of God connects God and humanity. This Story is a story created for God's children and is to be shared by God's children in every time and place. Jesus commanded his followers to "Go and tell!" in ways that connected God's Story to the story of all people.

The Biblical command to tell God's Story is no less important today. The word "liturgy" literally means "the work of the people," yet many worshippers participate only as spectators. Despite the Biblical, theological, and cultural foundations that call the entire faith community to the joyful task of creating and experiencing worship, the community is seldom involved in the creation of its worship celebration. Usually clergy plan, create, and lead the worship experience with minimal, if any, participation by laity. As a result, the faith stories of the people are seldom shared.

The project described in this work developed and facilitated a design for communal creation of post-modern worship experiences based upon storytelling. A team of laity and clergy began with Biblical stories, discerned the cultural need addressed by the stories, and created a thematic worship experience. The team sought to retell the Biblical story through 21st century media including contemporary music, images, drama, and multi-sensory elements. The sermon was also created in partnership between clergy and laity through internet-based dialogue and team gatherings.
