Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2010.
The purpose of this curriculum is to educate young fathers about the importance of their involvement in their children's lives. Specifically, the program is intended to help them gain awareness of how their own childhoods may affect them as fathers, increase their knowledge of various types of discipline, gain awareness of various childhood developmental stages and the typical behaviors thereof, and gain confidence in their ability as fathers. The curriculum consists of five 1½-hour sessions presented to the young fathers themselves in a group setting. The basis for the curriculum was created through a thorough examination of literature and research articles exploring juvenile delinquency, teenage pregnancy and parenthood and the combination thereof, as well as the effects of father absence and the effectiveness of parenting education programs. Limitations of the curriculum, implications for social work practice and advocacy, and implications for future curriculums were also addressed.
