Thesis (M.A.)--Prescott College, 2010.
This action research based thesis is focused on implementing Morning Meeting (MM) in the kindergarten classroom with the aim of fostering student involvement via promoting student involvement and cooperation both academically and socially. The four parts of MM are greeting, sharing, morning message, and group activity. Greeting involves interaction of the whole class through shaking hands, saying hello by name, or a song. Sharing allows students to state something of interest to them, as well as verbalize feelings and ideas positively. Group activity builds community by working together to a common goal. Morning message provides a brief review of academic skills through a short message specifically to the students. The purpose of this time is to have fun, get to know one another, and develop empathy. This thesis explains MM, as well as related literature, the action research process, the results, and includes discussion. In this paper, MM will be explained, the action research process shared, and the results will be examined to determine if MM contributes to the creation of a classroom community. Within this study, MM was found to be an effective method of alleviating typical classroom behaviors including calling out, tantrums, physical contact, and unkind words.
