The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of instructor type on fourth grade students' fruit and vegetable knowledge and consumption in a Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school. The objectives were (1) to determine the effectiveness of a dietetics professional's involvement in nutrition education, and (2) to compare the teaching effectiveness of a dietetics professional to a credentialed teacher in fourth grade nutrition education.

Two groups participated in nutrition lessons taught by their classroom teacher (22 students) or a dietetics professional (23 students) and completed a survey and food diary before and after the lessons. No significant difference was found in the scores (p = .091) or servings ( p = .536) between students possibly indicating that instructor type has no bearing on student learning. The implications of these results suggest that dietetics may be equally as effective as a classroom teacher in teaching nutrition in the classroom.
