Prior to the mid-nineteenth century, few institutions existed in the United States for the study or performance of classical music. America's conservatories, most of its famous orchestras, and concert halls were not established until the period between the Civil War and 1900.

Out of this emerging musical environment in America came a group of composers who spent a portion of their professional lives in Boston and New England. Among these were Edward MacDowell (1861-1908), and Mrs. H. H. A. (Amy) Beach (1867-1944). MacDowell and Beach performed as pianists in both the United States and Europe, and both composers produced a significant amount of works for piano. They were trained in the European classical/romantic tradition, though both identified with the American landscape.

This treatise, an analysis of the solo piano music of MacDowell and Beach, first presents the cultural environment leading up to the era of the composers by tracing the development of art music in the United States prior to the twentieth century. Since MacDowell and Beach were trained in the European tradition and since both chose to live and work as musicians in Boston, which was predominantly German-centric in its musical tastes, their music reflects the ideals of that environment.

Although neither MacDowell nor Beach attempted to separate from accepted norms, each achieved musical originality within his or her familiar language. A discussion of the training and philosophies of each composer precedes the analysis of the composers' music for solo piano. Wagnerian chromaticism, thick textures, frequent modulation, and pedal points reveal the composers' late romantic compositional language, yet both composers are classical in their approach to form and phrasing. MacDowell, however, is the more romantic tone poet of the two, with his many descriptive titles and literary connotations. The opinions of writers from throughout the twentieth century regarding the music of MacDowell and Beach are also examined.
