Green Chain explores how labor and nature interact at an Idaho plywood mill. This dissertation is based in participant observation (including employment at the mill). It examines the ambiguous relationship between rules and action when working with nature: labor with nature involves factors (e.g. group and performative knowledge) which resist being managed, or are simply 'unmanagable.'

After an introduction including a discussion of the labor process theory debate, histories of forest labor and forest institutions are presented using the works of E.P. Thompson and focusing upon a labor movement associated with forest labor at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Industrial Workers of the World (the Wobblies). A chronicle of struggles between forest labor and management over the last century follows, culminating in the present and life at the mill being considered.

The relationship between instrumental and expressive action in work settings is a theme throughout Green Chain, as is the intersection of social organization and practical activity. What machines can and cannot do, what managers can and cannot do, and the tactics of agrarian labor in an industrial setting are topics considered and discussed. The dissertation concludes with discussions of custom, and of the relationship between time and work. The conclusion suggests that if we wish to exhibit care in our relationship with nature, a reconsideration of the relationship between time and measures of productivity when working with nature is in order.
