Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Davis, 1999.
This is a cultural analysis of the labor process in excavation, based on ethnographic research conducted in southwestern. Idaho between August 1992 and June 1997. In it I focus on the words and labors of white, male, native-born heavy construction workers. I call these workers roughnecks. By this I mean that they are rural in orientation but engaged in industrial occupations on the metropolitan periphery. I explore the surplus of meaning and sociality that emerges at the point of production, and inquire into its social lability. I argue that roughnecks seek to realize a design for living in the capitalist labor process that valorizes a generalized rural existence. This takes the form of an ideological project that I call the ideology of the rural. Their efforts result in a collision between enfranchised white American masculinity and the capitalist labor process. The outcome of this collision demonstrates the limits of whiteness, citizenship, and masculinity as working class strategies of resistance and accommodation in the late modern American West.
