Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Virginia, 1998.
In the dissertation I explore the dynamics of production, exchange, and power in the town of Wazzan in northern Morocco. I focus on Wazzan's two salient realms of activity, its weaving trade and its religious order. I argue that underlying both domains is a similar generative set of values which offer a motivational system for production and exchange. As well as having economic dimensions these values are social and religious. They are expressions of and models for human intentionality, providing an ideology of transformation to define and motivate the person. I examine how these values relate to practice, specifically within the market of the weaving trade and in exchanges between sheikhs of the religious order and their followers. Relations of power are emergent, and I describe how these relations are expressed and manifest greater asymmetry over time. I further note how the dynamics of power and their attendant values intertwine with the disenchanting effects of the modern world system.
