Statement of the problem. The broad problem addressed in this study concerned the cross-cultural effectiveness of Ghanaians in Atlanta particularly in relation to their careers. The multiple factors responsible for the successful career development progress of some Ghanaians have not been clearly identified in previous literature. The purposes of the study were to describe the population of Ghanaians in Atlanta and to answer questions related to factors affecting career development.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Method. Descriptive data on Ghanaian immigrants in Atlanta were collected using structured interviews with 41 Ghanaian immigrants selected in a stratified random sample from a database of 280 Ghanaian households. Each structured interview consisted of a socioeconomic survey, the Cross-cultural Adaptability Inventory, the Job Satisfaction Scale, and the Self-anchoring Scale. Demographic data and textual material were analized. Measures were obtained for three aspects of career development (a) job satisfaction, (b) career goal attainment, and (c) professional prestige. Relationships were expected between each of the measures of career development and the Cross-cultural Adaptability Inventory. They were analyzed statistically with six simple correlations and one multiple regression.

Results. The demographic data portray the situation of Ghanaians in Atlanta regarding housing, ethnicity, neighborhood, migration history, household structure, and occupation. Textual material was organized into themes within five categories. The categories were living in Atlanta, career development, cross-cultural interaction, Ghana, and immigration. Statistically a positive relationship between each of the three career development variables was found, but there was no relationship between the career development variables and the Cross-cultural Adaptability Inventory.

Conclusions. It was concluded that (a) informants were appreciative regarding opportunities in the United States; (b) informants appeared to have a positive impact on Atlanta's economy; (c) the energy, enthusiasm, and skills of informants enrich Atlanta; (d) the nature of discrimination encountered by informants was not always as expected; (e) informants who work outside of their professional areas represent an under utilized segment of the work force; and (f) career development success can be measured based on obtaining work in ones professional field. Implications included reevaluation of attitudes toward immigrants and improved curriculum on African countries in United States schools.
