This study examined the patterns and determinants of engaging in high risk behaviours, such as sharing needles and injection equipment, among injection drug users (IDU) in Fredericton. Using semi-structured interviews, my study examined trends of injection drug use and drug availability and the correlation between exposure to risk environments and a greater susceptibility to engage in high risk behaviours and possible HIV/AIDS exposure. The major findings of this study include: (1) high risk behaviours among IDUs are complex and the social and environmental factors which shape and maintain them need to be addressed and discussed in detail; (2) sexual violence and gender issues among female IDU can increase their susceptibility to HIV/AIDS; and (3) addictions must be understood in both the biological and social context in which they exist.
