The dental remains of 49 individuals from two prehistoric Celtic archaeological sites (approximately 370--250 B.C.) in Austria were examined for the frequency and chronological distribution of linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) as an indicator of prior growth disruptions and stress. In addition, the two economic and geographically distinct populations were chosen to conclude if there is a relationship between the incidence of enamel hypoplasias and a particular subsistence economy.

The type and severity of the defect and number of teeth affected was determined by examination of each tooth under oblique light. Distance of each hypoplasia from the cemento-enamel junction was measured by needle-point caliper to pinpoint the age at which the stress occurred. The incidence of one or more hypoplasia between the mountain salt miners of Durrnburg (48.1%) as compared to the lowland agriculturalists of Mannersdorf (68.2%) shows that certain economic industries had greater effects on the health and nutrition of the population.
