This project describes the drinking practices of a group of Nova Scotian business men and women who are successfully employed in responsible positions. It was hypothesized that a study of the drinking practices of business men and women would show a wide range of drinking patterns and suggest role models for low risk drinking. It would also reveal risk factors and early warning signs of problematic drinking.

A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to a convenience sample of 514 business men and women selected from published directories. Management personnel were chosen from the Board of Trade Metro Business Directory and the Financial Post's Directory of Directors. 83 insurance agents were selected from the Yellow Pages and 140 Real Estate agents from a list published in the local press.

The maximum number of drinks taken in any one day and the total number of drinking days in a 30 day period were used as quantity-frequency measures. These were compared with self-classification of drinking, and drinking occasions in the preceding week. Family history of drinking problems, a list of negative consequences, the reasons for drinking, the importance of alcohol on special occasions and leisure activities with and without alcohol were also examined. The survey included the CAGE questionnaire, four questions which are used as a screening test for alcoholism. The test does not diagnose alcohol dependency, but a positive response to 2 or more questions raises the possibility that the person is dependent on alcohol.
