Thesis (M.A.)--Arizona State University, 1993.
A major portion of archaeological research in the Southwest has been directed at understanding the forms of and motives for prehistoric exchange. One aspect of this research has been the study of ceramic exchange. Ceramic exchange patterns have been reconstructed primarily from data on vessel design, temper, and paste chemistry, and temper mineralogy. The research for this thesis combines all of these kinds of data to determine the source and forms of distribution of Pinto Polychrome ceramics in Arizona. The combination of these kinds of analyses with theory on interaction and exchange adds to present knowledge on the distribution of this specific ceramic type. Determining its source and forms of distribution is useful for modeling interaction in east-central Arizona among the Salado and other contemporary prehistoric culture groups, such as the Mogollon, Anasazi, and Hohokam. This research is intended to provide a comparative basis for future examinations of other ceramic types, specifically, 13th and 14th century Salado and Western Pueblo ceramic types, along with the forms and causes of their exchange.Subjects--Topical Terms:
