This study links prehistoric climatic fluctuations to Gabrielino economic behavior. Reconstructions for prehistoric water resource availability and coastal sea-surface temperatures indicate that Southern California climate has been highly variable since 1671. Since the climate of Southern California was highly variable it is reasonable to conclude that environmental productivity was also highly variable. Periods of economic stress for the Gabrielino are inferred from these climatic reconstructions. Optimal foraging and risk reduction models provide predictions of Gabrielino economic behavior during these stressful periods.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Recent anthropological research suggests that cultural change is necessary when a hunter-gatherer population, with a given socio-political structure and technology, exceeds the carrying capacity of the environment. An extended adverse climatic perturbation resulting in reduced environmental productivity lowers the ability of the environment to sustain a given population. During these stressful economic periods cultural evolution may accelerate to manage a human population that exceeds the environmental carrying capacity.
