This study examined how three social studies teachers incorporated the James Banks Multicultural Integration Model into their eighth grade social studies classes in one school in a large urban Southeastern Pennsylvania district. The participants in the study represented three eighth grade classes in the school district that has a total enrollment of 261,000. Teacher and student questionnaires, teacher and student interviews, and on-site observations were used to collect data for this study. To achieve this goal, the researcher examined one school that had a diverse student population and used the Banks' model for multicultural integration. Basing the study on a need to develop a multicultural curriculum that serves all students equally, the researcher surveyed the literature before engaging in the study in the selected school. After examining the curriculum in each of the targeted classes, the study provided information that the James Banks model was unevenly implemented in the three social studies classes. Although many factors could have contributed to Banks multicultural education model being unevenly implemented in this school, two main factors were teachers' lack of multicultural education and not enough professional staff development training.
