Sociological literature posits the ethnic enclave economy as a transnational labor market that enables immigrants to procure employment regardless of human capital through ethnic group membership. While researchers agree that ethnic economies offer an opportunity for immigrant employment, they disagree on whether employment affords advantage or abuse. The present study contributes to this debate by (1) explicating the ethnic and class resources salient to employment within an Asian Indian ethnic economy, and (2) utilizing a participant-observation methodology to assess whether ethnic and class resources confer advantage or exploitation in the Indian labor market in Chicago. Interpretations are based on qualitative ethnographic research conducted in the ethnic workplace and quantitative analysis of census and interview data. A total of forty-six informants consisting of employers, employees, and business owners were interviewed.

The present study documents support for the sociological model of ethnicity in the form of ethnic resources as a form of capital for gaining employment in the ethnic economy while finding little evidence to support the significance of class resources in the form of traditional human capital investments. Exploitation is present in the ethnic economy, but limited to full-time female employees who make up less than half of the female labor pool. It is suggested that female exploitation is caused by their undocumented worker status, occupational segregation by sex, and a lack of marketable skills for employment in the non-ethnic labor market. Exploitation in the ethnic economy is mitigated by economic expansion in the cuisine sector, which necessitates the employment of a large number of mostly male immigrants. Advantage for employees is documented as socioeconomic benefits of employment tied to ethnic group membership. Economic advantages consist of subsidized housing, increased English proficiency, on-the-job training, and sponsorship for work permits through transnational job recruitment. Social advantages consist of companionship, continued utilization of native languages, and working in an environment where ideals of traditional family structure can be maintained.
