The purpose of this study was to investigate the music preferences of adults in northeastern Colorado communities in relation to selected variables. A music preference survey was randomly sent to subjects who were between the ages of 18 and 65. Subjects (N = 221) were then placed into age categories for comparison. Respondents were asked to provide information regarding their age, ethnicity, gender, musical training, and socioeconomic status and to indicate their preferences for 18 music style categories using a 5-point Likert scale. Additional descriptive questions asked subjects who received musical instruction to identify aspects of their training that enhanced their appreciation for music.

Results indicated a significant relationship between age and preferences for bluegrass, gospel, hard rock, new wave, opera, soft rock, and swing/big band music. Comparison between ethnic categories was not researched for there were not enough respondents between ethnic groups. A significant relationship was found between gender and bluegrass, contemporary Christian/sacred, disco, soft rock, soundtracks/Broadway shows/movies, and an "other" category of music. A statistically significant correlation between length of musical training and preference for classical, opera, and soft rock music was ascertained. An investigation between the type of musical training and preferences for art music indicated that participation in band, music appreciation, music theory, and private lessons was significantly correlated with classical music while participation in music theory, orchestra, and private lessons was significantly correlated with opera. In comparing popular music to the type of music instruction received, participation in band was significantly correlated with new wave music, while participation in music appreciation classes was significantly correlated with swing/big band styles. A lack of responses from upper and lower socioeconomic groups did not allow for a comparison between socioeconomic groups and adult music preference.
