The domains which I considered of critical concern to the study were trade, manufacture, historical and contemporary use, aesthetics, and the formation of meaning. A description of what these cloths are, the various types made today, and the realms of social life in which gudhe ngara (indigo cloths) remain essential components are explored. I outline the historical significance of the trade and production of indigo-dyed textiles to the region, and suggest a narrative for the spread of the techniques to the various ethnic groups now involved. I then concentrate on the artists of gudhe ngara : weavers, spinners, sewers, and dyers. I try to answer some of the questions still unresolved among scholars as to indigo dyers' (firsinobhe ) and weavers' (sanynyobhe or maabubhe) places in Fulbhe society, as well as how they are trained, and how they view themselves and their work. I discuss in depth how the cloths are made, including where various materials are produced or purchased. Additionally, the way Fulbhe philosophical concepts are brought to bear in the aesthetic evaluations of gudhe ngara as cloth and clothing, and gudhe ngara's role in constructing Fulbhe identity is addressed. Finally, I discuss the contemporary trade and extent of production, as well as the changing contexts of gudhe ngara today (from vital cultural object, to consumer good, to national emblem).
