The amount of input supplied by a person to a task depends positively on the extent to which that input is rewarded. When the measuring and monitoring cost associated with that input become considerable, a time wage may not be sufficient to achieve efficient allocation and, as such, other forms of compensation may become important.

Inheriting the farmland on which a person works is one form of return to farm labor that individuals can expect. However, because of ethnic and other social constraints, certain members of the household may not be in a position to inherit the farmland on which they work. For example, the inheritance rule of the matrilineal Akan directs that a man's property go to a selected member of his extended family, preferably his younger brother, or his uterine sister's son, and not to his spouse and children. Using data from 1991--92 Ghana Living Standards Survey, this dissertation shows that the contribution of farm labor by household members is differentiated by their predisposition to inherit the farmland on which they work. Other things being equal, if the farmland is "family" farmland as opposed to "private" or "leased" farmlands, and the farmland is controlled by an Akan man, then members of the man's extended family, compared to his spouse and children, are more likely to be the largest contributors of farm labor to the farmland.

By restricting the landholder's ability to dispose of land, "family" land tenure systems are indeed inefficient, compared to "private" land tenure systems. However, since potential inheritors work more on the farmland than those who cannot inherit, the is some kind of implicit trade or bargaining between landholders and inheritors, which works to reduce the inefficiency associated with constraints on transfers of "family" farmland.
