Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 1998.
This thesis focuses on the relationship between objects and human interaction: on the ways in which objects acquire meanings in human interaction, and the ways in which human interaction is articulated by the production, exchange, and consumption of objects. It traces the history of the potters of one village as they made and marketed their pottery, and as they evolved its production and trade in accordance with changing patterns of consumption. This history is placed in the contexts of the political economies of Catalonia, Spain, and Western Europe. Simultaneously, the thesis shows how the production, marketing, and consumption of pottery are inherently linked with physical aspects of these objects as these aspects have resulted from and affected their role in human relations.

At the beginning of this century, pottery manufacture in Miravet was embedded in a local economy founded on both subsistence-based and market-oriented agriculture: since then, it has been integrated into the modern international market. Concomitantly, pottery has been transformed from indispensable daily utensils to decorative handicrafts, and even in some instances to art objects. The nature of these transformations links the history of the potters in this village with the history of Catalonia, Spain, and Western Europe. In the first half of this century, Catalonia, as part of the Spanish State, lagged behind Western Europe economically. But since the return of democracy, Catalonia has become the part of Spain most economically integrated into the European Community. One effect of this internationalization has been the expansion of the distribution area to include northern European countries. The granting of autonomy under the new democracy also accelerated Catalans' interest in their cultual identity. They began to appreciate Catalan pottery as an aspect of this identity.

By juxtaposing the local history of this small group of producers (the potters of Miravet have never numbered more than fifty people) and their products, to the macro histories of Catalonia, Spain, and Europe, this thesis presents a local perspective on the transition to a market economy, and the subsequent development of this market as it has become integrated into the European economy.
