Thesis (Ph.D.)--Columbia University, 1998.

The geopolitical borders of the West Bank, specifically the Green Line with Israel and the bridges leading to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, shape inequalities in the lives of Palestinians. Inequalities of class, gender and nation have emerged among West Bank residents and between them and Israelis, Palestinians living abroad and foreigners. Cultural territorial identities are enforced at crossing checkpoints and this coercive classification reverberates into experiences of manhood and womanhood, migrant work, creating a business and the narratives of History. My primary findings and observations are that formal and informal policing of the borders maintains inequalities both material and ideologically, and that struggles against these conditions are filled with contradictions. A generalization of these observations is considered in a global History of borders in the final chapter and conclusions are drawn regarding the pitfalls of nationalist struggle and the practice of anthropology.
