The objectives of this exploratory study were to survey and describe the food consumption patterns of urban Thai adolescents, to explore the relationships among the food choice factors, to identify the major factors affecting their food choices, and to examine the relation between the food choices and food consumption of these children.

The participants in this study consisted of 1,320 students (732 females, 588 males), 12-15 years of age, who were enrolled in the seventh, eight, and ninth grades of three public high schools in the urban area of Ubonratchathani, Thailand.

Food frequency questionnaire with six categories of frequency was used to describe food consumption patterns. This food frequency questionnaire consisted of 41 common Thai food items divided into six food groups. The most frequently consumed food item for the meat, vegetable, fruit, grains and starch, beverage and snack groups was egg, cucumber, mango, rice, fruit juice and drink, and chips, respectively.

The food choice factors questionnaire consisted of six sections. Each section represented each of the six food groups listed above. In each group was a list of food items, and the participants were asked to choose one food item from the list and to indicate the importance of the 14 food choice factors on a 5-point scale.

Factor analysis was used to cluster the 14 food choice factors. Five factors were derived for all except the beverage group for which only four factors were produced. The cultural/personal influence was the factor most affecting food choices of the Thai adolescents. About 50% of the participants actually consumed the foods they chose for all except beverage (57%) and snack group (41%).
