The modern market is comprised of a series of interconnected co-dependent players, organized around issues of aesthetic and economic value in a structured hierarchy. There are boundaries between these market levels which are defended by both buyers and sellers. Each market level has its own set of players, from producers to dealers, experts to consumers. Objects flow within and between market segments. As objects move across market boundaries their characteristics may change significantly.

In this market where investment is often the primary motivation for acquisition, economic value takes primacy over other ways of assessing and assigning value.
