This study, using the moral economy approach, examines the concept of kerja (work). It analyses kerja as it is understood and interpreted by the Malays of Kampung Alur Mas, a village founded in the 1830's by rice farmers. Currently the villagers work mainly as laborers on the agency-managed village oil palm mini-estate and on construction sites in the nearby towns. The study scrutinizes the influence exercised by the moral economy, directly or indirectly, on the villager's decisions, conceptions, perceptions and attitudes toward work and working. The data for the study were gathered chiefly through participant-observation, and supplemented by archival materials.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The study shows that kerja is more than just income-generating activities. It covers non-income earning activities as well, such as community functions like weddings, feasts and communal work. The performance of both types of kerja is regarded as moral obligations which have to be fulfilled by the members of the community. Attitudes toward job selection is also influenced by the moral economy. Villagers, whenever possible, choose jobs which not only provide them with sufficient income for basic needs but also enough money and time for them to sponsor and participate in essential village rituals and perform other decencies. In connection with this, it was found that the state, which is now looked upon by the villagers as protector and savior of the moral economy, is expected to provide them with sources of income that will ensure both their biological and socio-cultural survival. This was clearly seen in the analysis of the worker-employer relationship on the village mini-estate.

The author concludes that the cultural life of this village of laborers, a culture based on an earlier agricultural economy, is slowly being eroded. The demand of the new occupation and the subsistence level income is forcing the villagers to work out compromises which are altering their socio-cultural life. The village is developing its own form of the post-peasant culture.
