Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Catholic University of America, 1993.
This dissertation describes the response of a kibbutz, Chevrah, to social and economic pressures arising from a period of rapid economic, social and political changes in the State of Israel. It focuses on the "moral economy" of Chevrah--notions of economic justice and exploitation--and how it redefines itself in an individualistic and capitalist society while trying to retain the original values of communalism and socialism.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Seven months of fieldwork and extensive use of historical and ethnographic methods were employed to study the historical context of the kibbutz; its communitarian and ideological matrix; social and economic measures taken by Israeli State and society affecting the kibbutz; and the spheres of kibbutz society, culture and economy in which ideology is negotiated and acted upon.

Chevrah's discourses on its "moral economy," take the form of competition between proponents of a "New Kibbutz" and those who advocate the old order, indicating two different worldviews, created by changing conditions in Israeli society. "New Kibbutz" proponents argue for an improvement in economic efficiency to avoid the crisis which has settled over Chevrah.

The critics of socialism, employ a new discourse of capitalist efficiency, stating that socialism has failed to pay its bills, to deliver goods, and to defend individual liberty. However, there is more to Chevrah's crisis than the failure of socialism. The changes in Israeli society, in its political arena, its new class relations, and the economic problems affecting the kibbutz are the real causes of the kibbutz crisis. The problems of the kibbutz are the result of the ills of a capitalist Israeli State. One can neither blame socialist practices for Chevrah's economic crisis, nor expect that the adoption of capitalist "efficiencies" will solve the kibbutz's problems.

Chevrah's members strive to live together in an equalitarian environment, struggling to maintain their "moral economy" unified, unconsciously using the long thread of Jewish history and values. Socialism and Judaism strive for a self-sufficient economy that has the ability to provide to all its members an equal share in the nation's resources.
