The works and principles of Confucian philosophy---including its orientation towards common daily affairs, its primary intention, and historical proving ground---have long since made their way into the English language. Yet it is still not widely understood. Although it is abstractly understood to have been important in traditional Chinese culture, its value in contemporary life, the depth, simplicity, and practicality of the original philosophy is, generally speaking, underappreciated and underutilized. The present study focuses particularly on the concept and characteristics of chun tzu , the "superior person." This dissertation is a descriptive analysis of the superior person as a model for Confucian practice, as presented in the "Four Books" of Confucianism---The Analects, The Great Learning, The Doctrine of the Mean, and The Book of Mencius---and the "Ten Wings" commentary on the I Ching, intended to provide a more accessible context through which to see how Confucian humanistic values can be embodied.

There are three qualities---the foundations of Confucian philosophy---upon which the model of the superior person is built: jen or "humanity" in The Analects; i/yi or "righteousness" in The Book of Mencius; and ch'eng or "sincerity" in The Doctrine of the Mean. Superior people in The Analects illustrate distinct personality traits, such as emphasizing virtue and righteousness over profit, that distinguish them from inferior people. Superior people also follow such principles to deal with various changes and real life situations. Indeed, superior people have the ability to understand and follow righteousness in any situation, as shown in the Great Image, the Ta Hsiang wing of the "Ten Wings" commentary on the I Ching [Book of Changes]. Furthermore, the education of superior people, based on humanity and virtue, is shown, in the Great Learning , to be most effective in establishing a harmonious, peaceful society.
