The structure of emotional experience in older adults and the utility of the positive and negative affectivity model in distinguishing anxious and depressive symptoms were examined. Prior investigations of the structure of emotional experience in adults suggested that negative affectivity is associated with both depression and anxiety, while positive affectivity is negatively correlated with only depression. However, subsequent tests of this two-factor model of positive and negative affect in older adults suggested that the two-factor model might be inadequate for characterizing the structure of emotion in this age group. The structure of emotion was tested in non-referred participants over age 64 (N=200) using confirmatory factor analyses and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule. The internal consistency of each affective dimension and relationships of identified factors with measures of anxiety and depression as well as with risk factors for affective disorders were examined. Both a two-factor and three-factor model fit the data reasonably well. However, the two emerging negative affect factors in the three-factor model did not differentially relate to anxiety and depression or risk factors for emotional experience. Thus, an evaluation of the relationship of these factor structures with measures of emotional experience suggested that a two-factor model is more parsimonious, reliable, and demonstrates stronger relations with subordinate measures of positive and negative affect. Furthermore, a relationship was identified between low positive affect and social phobia in addition to the relationship with depression. Greater understanding of the affective experience of older adults has implications for the conceptualization, assessment and treatment of anxiety and depression in late-life. Support for a mixed anxiety-depression category to conceptualize late-life mood disturbance and implications for the relationship between low positive affect with both depression and social phobia shall be discussed.
