Palladium is a useful catalyst in transforming the C-H bond into other functional groups. In this dissertation, an efficient and general electron-rich intermolecular heterocycle arylation process based on C-H activation has been developed. This methodology is the first general method for electron-rich heterocycle arylation with aryl chlorides. Mechanistic studies point to an electrophilic substitution pathway as the most likely mechanism for the reaction.

In addition, two methods for direct ortho-arylation of benzoic acids have been developed. The first method involves the use of catalytic palladium acetate, stoichiometric silver acetate, and an aryl iodide coupling partner. This method most likely proceeds through a Pd(II)-Pd(IV) coupling cycle. The second method involves the use of catalytic palladium in combination with n-butyldi-1-adamantylphosphine, cesium carbonate base, and an aryl chloride coupling partner. The reaction requires the presence of molecular sieves. Benzoic acids of any electronic properties are reactive. Inter- and intramolecular isotope effects for the benzoic acid arylation by aryl chlorides have been determined and were found to be the same with a magnitude of 4.4, pointing toward heterolytic C-H bond cleavage as the turnover-limiting step.

Finally, the first silver(I) beta-diketiminate complexes have been prepared and characterized. The structures of a silver(I)-ethylene, -acetonitrile, -triphenylphosphine, tert-butylisocyanide and 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide complexes supported by fluorinated beta-diketiminate ligands and silver(I)-IMes (IMes = 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene) supported by an unfluorinated beta-diketiminate ligand were determined by X-ray crystallography.
