Adaptation in elite sport delineates the adjustment strategies of amateur and professional athletes during career transitions (e.g., promotion, relocation). Fiske (2004) recently identified five core motives as vehicles of adaptation: understanding, controlling, self-enhancement, belonging, and trusting. These motives were then contextualized in the sport setting with archival data about National Hockey League (NHL) players (Schinke, Gauthier, Dubuc, & Crowder, 2007) and Canadian Olympians (Schinke, Battochio, Dubuc, Swords, Apolloni, & Tenenbaum, 2008). The present study attempted to support the findings from earlier reports in addition to uncovering any new adaptation challenges and sub-strategies pertaining to NHL players. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with each player categorized within one of four groups: prospects, rookies, veterans, and retired players. As a result, 11 contextual challenges and 13 adaptation sub-strategies were identified and described. Among the findings, scouting and media demands were novel challenges while understanding one's performance, belonging to a team, and trusting player agents were adaptation sub-strategies uncovered from the present study. The results pertain to those (e.g., athletes, coaches, and sport psychologists) looking to further their understanding of the contextual challenges and subsequent adaptation sub-strategies employed by professional hockey players in the NHL.
