The purpose of this study was to determine if there were a significant difference in the leadership styles of male and female secondary principals as perceived by teachers and the principals being studied. Further, the study explored whether or not the leadership styles of principals had a significant influence on the school climate. This study used quantitative and qualitative data. The primary method of analysis was qualitative. Qualitative data were collected from teachers and principals of 10 participating schools with even numbers of male and female principals using both versions of the Leadership Practices Inventory (Self and Observer). Analysis of the qualitative data revealed that the teachers' perceptions of their male principals' leadership style was "Challenge the Process." This style is characterized by taking risks, experimenting and moving away from conventional methods of leadership. Female leaders were perceived by teachers as engaging in the "Encourage the Heart" style of leadership. This style is characterized by the leader's concern and compassion for their constituents. The quantitative portion of the study was conducted using an ANOVA to determine if the leadership styles had an influence on the school climate. Results suggest that the leadership styles of principals have no influence on the school climate. However, further analysis of data from the School Climate Staff Survey revealed that teachers' perceptions of their principals played a pivotal role in determining the school's climate.
