This was a qualitative case study designed to explore the phenomenon that occurred during an intentionally anti-racist interdisciplinary physical education curriculum. The purpose of this research was to raise awareness of students through movement experiences to think critically about the world in which they live. Further the purpose was to document those experiences as one way to advance the practice of physical education, and education in general, to increase student engagement and achievement across domains. This study was situated in the theoretical framework of critical pedagogy. As a part of the study, a movement based curriculum of games, dances, and creative movement skills that explored the oppressive practice of enslavement as both a historical and a contemporary social issue was co-created with the participants. The participants were 30 fifth and sixth graders who attended Hayes Elementary School. The interdisciplinary nature of this curriculum was exemplified through the way that vocabulary discovered through the research projects and in the texts was then used as the foundation for movement exploration: movement exploration that resulted in a final choreography project that was presented to the school community. Data for this study was collected through interviews, critically reflective drawings, video, self-esteem inventories, and a researcher's journal. An exhaustive analysis of data through open and axial coding took place to reveal patterns that could be synthesized into the major findings of the research. The major findings of this case study were: (a) that an increased positive perception of movement emerged with an increase in the participant's perceived ability to execute skills and actions, (b) new meanings were constructed across content areas by participants from their experience with the curriculum, (c) the movement based interdisciplinary curriculum provided participants access to the use of language in defining themselves and their agency, (d) participants development of racial identities and understandings emerged in a pattern, (e) individual and collective feelings of esteem and value emerged from working together as a group and, (f) the effort to create and implement curriculum to address literacy, movement education, and to raise the conscious awareness of participants was a valuable aspect of professional renewal for the researcher.
