Thesis (Ph.D.)--Drew University, 2009.
This dissertation proposes ritual analysis as a methodology for discovering and articulating a theology of presbyteral ordination in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) by shifting the focus to the meaning-making capacity of a gathered local assembly. It critiques previous attempts by surveying official statements from higher governing bodies; The Book of Confessions and The Book of Order; and the writings of a representative group of Reformed theologians (John Calvin, Martin Bucer, Francis Turretin, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Karl Barth, and Thomas F. Torrance). The main thrust of the critique (George Lindbeck, Louis-Marie Chauvet, Graham Hughes) lies in the fact that these "upper-tier" sources of theology do not adequately account for the local liturgical celebration of ordination---the liturgical texts employed, the phenomenology of the ordination rite, the experiences of the gathered assembly, analysis of the liturgical space and local context, the sermon and preacher, and the viewpoints of the ordinand. The dissertation employs liturgical theology through the field of ritual studies and narrative theory. Four case studies of actual ordinations (2 ministers, 2 elders) will demonstrate the proposed methodology in action. A comparative analysis between the "official" and the enacted local theologies will provide a basis to assert that local assemblies are a necessary, constitutive, and complementary source of theology for the internal, present discussions underway in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) over ordination standards and the positive implications for Reformed ecumenical dialogues.
