The general purpose of this dissertation was to examine dimensions of organizational capacity in nonprofit community sport. This document is comprised of three separate studies that were conducted to achieve this purpose.

The purpose of Study 1 was to develop an understanding of the perceived influence of multiple capacity dimensions on community sport organization (CSO) goal achievement by examining the nature of capacity in the context of one nonprofit CSO. The case study incorporated interviews with board members and coaches (N = 7) as well as active-member researcher observations. The findings revealed key strengths and challenges within the dimensions of human resources, financial, relationships/networks, infrastructure and process, and planning and development capacity. Several connections among the dimensions were also revealed.

The purpose of Study 2 was to qualitatively investigate relationship and network capacity in order to better understand the nature and impact of this dimension in the small nonprofit context. The study explored the formation, process, and outcomes of interorganizational relationships in CSOs through semi-structured interviews with presidents of these organizations ( N = 20). The findings revealed that relationships were primarily formed by CSOs through known contacts in order to acquire physical and financial resources. Key characteristics of the relationship process included dynamics such as trust, consistency, balance and engagement, as well as specific skills and amount of time required for relationship management. The findings also revealed that relationships impacted CSOs through enabling improvements to program/service quality and operations, and enhancing community presence.

Building on these exploratory findings, the purpose of Study 3 was to examine the process and outcomes of CSO-sponsor relationships. Objectives of the study included developing measures of the relationship process and outcomes, determining the perceived extent of the various elements of relationship process and relationship outcomes, and examining the association between the relationship process and further outcomes. A further objective was to identify any significant predictors of these outcomes. CSO presidents (N = 189) completed a survey and results revealed support for four relationship process elements (operational competence, dependability, balance, and relational competence) and two relationship outcomes (program/operations quality and community presence). The strongest predictor of these outcomes, operational competence, was perceived to be evident in CSO-sponsor relationships to a significantly lesser extent than other process elements.
