Since the advent of Title IX, the increased use of ergogenic substances by male and female athletes suggests a need to investigate the attitudes of both male and female collegiate track and field athletes towards the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The purpose of the quantitative study was to determine the attitudes of male and female collegiate track athletes towards performance-enhancing drugs so sport managers, athletic directors, and sport business organizations may have better insight into how to address the issue of ergogenic aid use, as well as be more proactive in gender-sensitive education of their athletes. A survey was modified from a combination of survey items used in two previous studies. The survey was posted on eight websites where the respondents downloaded the survey and voluntarily participated in the study. The Mann-Whitney test was utilized for ordinal data which does not meet normality, and the independent samples t-test for ordinal data that met the assumption of normality. There were 213 respondents, 121 male and 92 female. The results of this investigation generally showed a consistency between the attitudes of male and female collegiate track and field athletes among five of the six research questions. However, the second research question found the data analysis can be rejected at a .05 significance level indicating a significant difference between the attitudes of male and female collegiate track and field athletes towards the perceived competitive advantage resulting from the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Future research should investigate the attitudes of athletes from specific collegiate levels, such as junior college, NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA institutions, to see whether there are any differences between those athletes and the athletes in the present study.
