Preaching in most Catholic parishes is notoriously uninspired. African Americans throughout this country almost unanimously will attest to this fact. Those called to minister in African American congregations must see it as their duty to develop the art of effective, Spirit-filled preaching. Black preaching is a black folk art, but this does not mean that whites cannot be trained in certain techniques of this black art. Some white pastors have acquired the ability to preach in the black genre without doing a disservice to the integrity of their cultural identities. Conversely, many white preachers use their identity as an unacceptable excuse for mediocrity. Preaching in the black genre implies with an eloquence that exegetes both the scriptural text and the congregation. The "Good News" must be addressed to this particular people, and the hermeneutical application of it must be made to their own situation.

Black spirituality is pervaded with the African American experience and awareness. Black spirituality is at once a response to and a reflection of African American life and culture. It is rooted in African heritage and religious traditions. Black spirituality is best characterized as being contemplative, holistic, biblical, joyful and communal.

Evangelization for African Americans means that the good news is received wrapped in their unique cultural context. Therefore, from its evolution from the oral tradition of Africa, to its effects on slave religion, to the prophetic role it has played in the quest for equal power and civil rights of African Americans in this country, black preaching has sought to heal, empower, and encourage African Americans and all others who appreciate its style.

Based on research, a focus group, and interviews, a course on preaching in African American Catholic settings was designed and implemented. The specific aim of the course examined the nature of a biblical homily and its place in the Liturgy of the Word. Techniques of the black preaching style were explored and utilized. Students composed and delivered homilies incorporating sound biblical exegesis and theological content while honing the tenets of the black preaching style.

In the final analysis, non-African Americans will be prepared to preach in African American Catholic settings only when they are able to confront their racist attitudes, are willing and want to minister in this community, are truly open to this culture in its various expressions, are willing to study formally its history and preaching style and culture, and enter as listeners and learners into its life in order to be good pastors and teachers in the faith.
