Thesis (D.Min.)--Aquinas Institute of Theology, 2000.
Today's television-saturated culture challenges preachers to consider their ministry in light of television's pervasive influence. The thesis of this project is that preaching in a television-saturated culture and society is enhanced by the preacher's knowledge of television as a means of social communication; by developing skills for assessing media messages and image patterns; by understanding the theological implications raised by television's influence; and by recognizing and capitalizing on aspects of the medium that serve to communicate the gospel in contemporary culture. Study of television's communication dynamics, assessment of societal myths and images espoused by television, and incorporation of positive aspects of television communication in preaching events provide a homiletic forum by which preachers engage creatively with their congregations and raise up an alternative vision of life to the one imaged by television.

Chapter One provides an overview of the three main communication eras and how each era affected communication methods. The chapter ends with an exploration of television's ritualization of contemporary life and its use of iconic and metaphoric images. Chapter Two delves further into television's mythic depiction of life and illustrates some of the basic societal myths portrayed by television. Chapter Three assesses television's influence from the perspective of a theology of communication based primarily on the model of the Trinity. Chapter Four explores the hegemony of television and provides a method of critical demystification by which to assess television and its programming. Chapter Five contains homiletic principles, strategies, and suggestions. Central to Chapter Five are the principles of preaching as: (1) intersection of sacred and human; (2) awakening of interiority; (3) refiguring of television narratives; and (4) modulation of sound and image. Chapter Six contains a curriculum guide for a preaching workshop to benefit those wanting to improve their homiletic abilities in a television-saturated culture.
