Introduction and a Framework for Analysis -- The Proto-Peer Competitor and the Hegemon -- The Dynamics of Russian-American Ties -- The Elephant and the Eagle: The Ups and Downs of a Cooperative -- Relationship and Soft Balancing -- Competitive and Cooperative Relationships of the Great Powers -- The Hegemon's Maneuvers -- Conclusion: Future Maneuvers of the Great Powers.
A global power transformation is taking place without a major war or any other cataclysmic event. The great powers {esc}b6{esc}s China, India and Russia {esc}b6{esc}s challenge the Hegemon {esc}b6{esc}s the United States {esc}b6{esc}s{C8}as well as each other with their strategic maneuvers. In this book, Ehsan Ahrari shows that while the sustained rise of China as the US' proto-peer is a reality, there is nothing inevitable about the demise of the US as the superpower. The next decade of the 21st Century may witness the emergence of a bipolar order where China leads in economics but does not seriously challenge the military dominance of the US. India's powers will grow, not least due to its evolving strategic partnership with the US. Russia, however, will be left behind largely due to its weak economy. Finally, he argues that the US will remain the lone superpower, because of its sustained strategic dominance in East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, and because it has maintained a highly proactive profile in leading the world economy out of the current recession.
