With little research documenting the lay perspective on medicines as health care, the purpose of this study is to describe and document elderly patients' medication-related decision-making and drug-use behaviour. The research is theorized around the notion of the patient as decision-maker, and is intended to challenge the narrow view of the "passive patient", conceptualized in compliance research. Participants were recruited from a Toronto community health centre. One group (N=5) was part of a program where a consulting pharmacist offers "pharmaceutical care". The second group (N=10) were recruited from other programs offered at the centre. The findings of this research suggest that medication use behaviours can be purposeful or incidental, reasoned, or non-reasoned and that patient behaviour can and does change over time. This research is intended to expand our understanding of the relationship between patient perceptions, patient-health care professional relationships and pharmaceutical care and patient medication-use decision making and behaviour.
