Resistance training can reverse some of the functional limitations which exist in older adults due to age-related loss of muscle strength and mass and can also help older adults maintain independent living. Several issues related to resistance training should be clarified in order for older people to exercise in the safest and most productive way. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of rest interval on the decline of torque (muscle fatigue) between the sets of an isokinetic resistance exercise between physically active younger and older women. Twenty younger women (22.4+/-1.7 years) and sixteen older women (70.7+/-4.3 years) performed three sets of eight maximum repetitions of knee extension/flexion at 60° per second. The rest interval between the sets was 15, 30 and 60 seconds and was randomly assigned on the three days of the testing. 3-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed that there was no significant interaction of rest by set by group and there was a significant main effect of mean torque and power by set when 15 and 30sec rest period between the sets was used but not when 60sec rest period was used. In conclusion physically active younger and older women might need the same rest interval for this specific fatiguing protocol and also, 1:2 work-to-rest ratio is enough for complete recovery of the mean torque.
