Aging in America is a play that illustrates how both the experience and the perception of aging are informed by culture and class, viewing aging from a variety of perspectives. Westerners, especially Americans, are led to believe that the aging process is a monolithic, biologically determined inevitability. However, a new realization has emerged. There is at least much evidence that this process is far less about physiology and more about culture including class, gender, and ethnicity. A cultural approach to aging raises the possibility that there are a number of ways that individuals behave in and perceive old age. The central questions posed by this project are: Do culture and class have an effect on how one ages, and do they affect how aging is perceived? and Can the medium of theatre effectively pose these questions and possible answers? A reflective essay accompanies the play.
