Thesis (M.S.)--Touro College, 2006.
Medication compliance becomes a difficult task for some mentally ill individuals. Non-compliance occurs for various reasons; factors include demographics, financial, personal, society views, side effects, and patient-physician relationship. Non-compliance behavior in mentally ill individuals can create problems in society. Due to the outcome of this behavior, it in turn, becomes a public health issue. Measures and interventions must be research in order to monitor and increase compliance levels among the mentally ill. The author reviewed studies published from 1995 to 2005. Literature searches were conducted for that period using Proquest and Google scholar. The primary search terms were "mental disorder", "medication compliance", and "adherence". There is a direct relationship between measures, demographics, and intervention to compliance rates. Lower compliance rates may reveal issues in treatment and measures. The author suggests that further research of measures and interventions must be done in order to improve compliance rates in the future.
